Unable to see Skype group chat windows

I've had a very inconsistent experience with Skype on Trillian. While individual contact windows function normally, groups do not appear at all, even as people in the group send messages or make calls.
I know it's supposed to work, because I've had it function successfully on a few machines. My home desktop was unable to display them; so I tried re-installing Trillian, which worked...until I restarted my machine, and group windows do not show anymore. This is particularly frustrating because group calls will apparently go through Trillian, but there is no window or notification that appears to allow me to take the call, so all I hear is the ringing.

I am sorry for the trouble. Click the Trillian button at the top of the buddy list and then click "Help->About" and let me know what version of Trillian you are running.

    Thanks!

    It's 5.1 Build 21, running on Win7 64-bit.

Hi - have you noticed any pattern to the group windows not functioning? For the most part, when someone messages you in a group the window should just appear with a list of names on the right. If we can track down a reproduction case I can attempt it on my machine to see if anything pops up.

I'm not sure if there was a pattern at all; Skype just never properly worked on my desktop from the start.

When I started using Skype via Trillian on the most recent build going back around January or February of this year on my home desktop, it worked fine without issues with functioning group windows and calls, if I recall correctly. However, I think after a reboot or some period of time, starting Skype on Trillian would also start up the separate Skype installation on my machine! Even if the skype.exe wasn't running, logging into Skype on Trillian would cause it to start running. I stopped using Skype on Trillian afterwards.

When I logged into Skype on Trillian again on my home desktop on the updated build last month, everything was working normally except for the group windows as described. I uninstalled Trillian and reinstalled immediately, which made the group windows appear again, until rebooting caused it to not work again. However, I currently have installed Trillian on two other desktops in my workplace with Skype working correctly for me.

I want to know if there are particular registry files I can remove to see if it would help this issue. Please advise.

No, we don't really use the registry. The only thing I can think of is that you might have a weird combination of "Old Trillian" and "New Trillian" - our older versions (5.0 and below) used a Skype plugin that required you to run Skype at the same time, which might explain why Skype would randomly launch itself when you didn't want it to.

The fact that newer computers seem to work without trouble is another reason I'm heading down this line of thinking. Maybe we can check the broken computer to ensure it's using the latest version of the Skype plugin? If you're able to reproduce any funny behavior, double check the Trillian version and look in Preferences -> Plugins to check the version of the Skype plugin itself.

I just checked, and it says Skype 5.1.
I am still unable to see group windows.

Do you hear any sounds playing when people send messages? Another thought is that the window is being created but is somehow not visible on your desktop. Do you see a taskbar entry for the group window or any other clue that it might be 'hiding' somewhere?

I do not have sounds enabled, but I will turn it on the next time I start the PC up.
I do not see any possible presence that the window might exist; I don't see any taskbar entries for it, nor do I see my window flashing. Flipping through my existing windows don't bring up any sign for the Skype group.

For the record, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Trillian once again., which did nothing to fix the problem this time. I noticed that all my previous settings and preferences were intact on installing again. How would I go about truly "cleaning" out Trillian from my desktop and trying this back from the top?

I have enabled sounds, and YES, sounds are being played when I receive messages in the Skype group, but I am still unable to see/find the window. So I am guessing that the group window is existing somewhere, but is unable to be properly displayed.

OK, that's a good clue of something. Let's try:

    1) Disconnect from Skype.

    2) Go into prefs -> chat windows and click 'reset to default' under the new window options.

    3) Reconnect to Skype and see if it helps?

    That did nothing, unfortunately.

Also, clicking "reset to default" made no changes to the window settings as far as I could tell, even after I moved them around and changed them. They did not return to the default state.

open the trillian client and click 'view" button on the very top. There will be all the group windows. just select one and from that point on it'll open with every new msg to the group.

I'm sorry, but I cannot understand those instructions. Can you provide a screenshot of said "view" button?
