google talk login widget not accepting my new passwords

i recently started receiving messages from all versions of the client (desktop v5.0 b35 pro, Blackberry, and web) that google talk isn't logged in due to wrong password. I had changed it once about 3 weeks ago and thought I had changed it in Trillian, because after I had changed it, Trillian didn't give me any errors. About the last 2 weeks, I've tried various new password changes on Google and have successful log-ins for Google services, but subsequent changes to the Trillian login widget fail to connect to the service, giving me an error of "Google Talk password incorrect"

Having the same issue. I've tried removing the Google Talk account and re-adding it, but it still keeps telling me the Password is incorrect on both Web and Android versions of Trillian.

Hi Harley - are you using Google's two-factor authentication or anything similar? Make sure your username is in the "[email blocked]" form, or similar, and not just "user". Has this ever worked for you?

yes, using 2 factor auth. I have google's blackberry app also, so wouldn't their api offer a secondary prompt as well?

You need to set up a special password for Trillian. Third party apps don't integrate into 2 factor auth directly, but you can generate a password inside your Google account settings and use it inside of Trillian.

This comment was split into a new private discussion: google talk login widget not accepting my new passwords

Generating a password failed to work for me. My problem is the same as everyone else's: trillian on all platforms keeps saying my gTalk password is incorrect.

I changed the password on that google account this morning because I was required to do so by google. Trillian asked for the new password. Trillian wouldn't accept the new password on any platform. Then I turned on two-factor auth for my google account and created an app-specific password, which still does not work on my iphone.

New to this, but I'm having the same password problem across all platforms. Being told wrong PW.

HAHA - THIS solves the issue - just unlock the Google Captcha:

I also cannot get Google Talk to work, I did not have 2 factor authentication on and it didn't work, when I tried adding 2 factor authentication and generated an application-specific password it still does not log in. The password works fine when I log into google talk directly.

Using the iPhone version of Trillian, no two-factor authorization. I was getting the same behavior: Trillian would keep telling me my Google password was incorrect.

Jason has a solution! I also went to Google's CAPTCHA unlock page and after doing that, Trillian accepted my password and connected right up. If Trillian could be a little more transparent about exactly what kind of password failure was going on, and offer a link to the unlock somehow, that would make this particular problem a lot less unfriendly and mysterious for users.

I could connect to Google Talk using the desktop client but not using the Web client. Unlocking the CAPTCHA allowed me to connect using the Web client. I left the (Firefox) Web client logged in and connected to Trillian using a different browser (IE). The Firefox client was logged off automatically. I logged off the IE client and Reconnected the Firefox client. I couldn't connect to Google Talk until I unlocked the CAPTCHA again.

I then intentionally signed-off and closed the browser tab that contained the Web client. I opened a new tab in the browser and went to Trillian Web messenger. It signed into Google Talk correctly and automatically. I intentionally signed-off and went to Web chat in a new IE browser. I was logged into Google chat correctly.

Although I can't now reproduce this at-will, can it be that Google Talk needs the account unlocked through the CAPTCHA if an account is signed into from two locations simultaneously ?

It seems that the CAPTCHA use is documented in Google's authentication API (ClientLogin authentication) and it's returning the URL for a CAPTCHA challenge that Trillian Web is interpreting as 'incorrect password' and displaying an error message, rather than starting a browser to allow the user to answer the challenge ............... I think

There's more details on the URL "http://code.google.com/apis/accounts/docs/AuthForInstalledApps.html" on how to create a permanent password that isn't subject to authentication testing using CAPTCHA ......... does Trillian support using one of those ?

    From the URL given above:

How to use your application-specific passwords with APIs

For APIs using ClientLogin authentication, use your API application-specific password in the Passwd attribute when making a POST request to the ClientLogin resource. An XML example of the POST request's body:

    Email=[email blocked]&Passwd=access_code&accountType=HOSTED_OR_GOOGLE&service=apps

Yes, that's accurate - it's on our list to add support for the CAPTCHA challenge to Trillian. Good sleuthing :)

Do you have to enter a @gmail e-mail address to Google Talk to Trillian?? I use my @yahoo.com e-mail address to access Google Talk, but maybe that's why this is happening??

    hi,
I have authenticated gtalk in my bb using generated password, which is suppose to be a one time authentication. But after few days it request again for password though I set it to remember password.
what can I do so that I don't have to generate the password everytime I need to use my bb?

It's been on the to-do list since January?!?!?!?!?!?

One would think that the client could at least pop up a browser pointing to a TRILLIAN page describing a solution if nothing else.
