Unwanted contact requests
How do I block strangers from seeing me? I keep getting unwanted requests for "permission to add you to their list", but sometimes they are even obscene with lewd comments. It is really disruptive to work as these pop up on the screen. Most of the time they look like the attached file.

I should also add that I have already changed my privacy on all of my other accounts to only receive things from people on my friends list.

They are annoying and you have the settings in place, but sometimes they still get through. The best thing to do is roll over that popup and click "Deny". Eventually, they'll slow to a very small trickle (I get about one a month).
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I've tried rolling over it and there's no "Deny". I've been getting this request for two days. How can I get rid of it?

Can you send me a screenshot of the notification you're receiving?

Glenn - here it is. Scroll to the right. Thanks! Fran

Hi,
I am experiencing the same problem - for months I have clicked on the red 'x' in the top right corner because there is no 'deny' or 'block contact' option.
Is there a solution to this?
Thank you,
Cara

Try clicking directly on the popup - it may need to expand o show the "Deny" button.

Hi Glen,
I've tried all sorts of things, there is no 'deny' option anywhere... I've right clicked and left clicked on these pop-ups, and all that happens is that the pop-up disappears, but next time I log in it re-appers and there's no option to deny or block anywhere!
Thanks and regards,Cara

Me too
There IS a Deny button on the Windows version of Trillian but NOT on the Web version of Trillian. (This is Web forum, right ?)
Can we have a Deny button on the Web version too please ?

I was having the same issue here but in the process of getting a screenshot I figured it out. If you click on the message in the window (blahblah has requested permission to add you to their contact list) a larger window appears and gives you the option to deny their request! For the record this has been bothering me for weeks, I kept trying to right click on the window (which closes it) or find something in the preferences to block people. Allow and deny should be right on that pop up window.

Thanks Ellie, I have been having this problem for over a year and have just been clicking the "X" to close that message. Occasionally when enough of these requests popped up I would change to some old "skin" to deny the requests. Your pointer will definitely save me some time. I wonder when they put that in?
Thanks again,
Dan

I suspect they keep changing and rotating their user ID. That means you kill off one but they soon appear as another. I want to turn off all requests for friends for now and turn it on only if someone I know wants in. Where is the option to turn off all friend/contact requests?

This is useful info. I, too, have been trying to find a "Deny" button. Seems to me common sense, as attempts by strangers to join one's contact list are so problematic, Trillian should make the deny/block feature obvious. There definitely should also be a way to turn off such requests so they never appear in the first place.

Would it make a difference if we upgraded to Trillian Pro? They really are annoying...I seem to be getting them more frequently now... 6-7 per day... since I upgraded to Trillian 5.2...

Trillian Pro will not solve your problem. I still receive several requests a day, and I have been on Pro now for a couple of years. There are plenty of reasons to "Go Pro", but eliminating unwanted requests is not one of them.

Yep, this needs attention. I don't get a lot of them, but 4 or 5 every morning is a pain!
I've gone through the docs and preferences and want to be able to set myself so NO ONE can request to be added to my contact list. I'm the mod on a couple of forums and people who really need to IM me know to leave a message there and I add them. I don't need / want unsolicited contacts!
I have better things to do with my time than to wander around blocking every tom/dick/harry who has my email.
BTW, I've been pro since hector was a pup!

I've started getting these too, and the above discussion is helpful.
What it does not address is what account the request is for - like [email blocked], [email blocked], [email blocked], zork@Astra. Is there a way to find that out prior to Denying?
Thanks!

The (e-mail blocked) were "dummy" accounts at AIM and Yahoo like zork@ and blah@

Don Petty answered this on my post in the Windows discussion, so I'm repeating it here.
They think most of these come from Yahoo, and identifying the source is on the Feature Request list for the Developers.

Normally, I am able to block the contact request - but in this case, I click ignore, and then block but they are able to make it through the block.
[email blocked]
Pretty lame to get this ALL the time, and then block not working on this user.
Why is the block not working? Insta-chat.net busting through your systems?
Why ONLY through trillian do I get so many SPIM (IM SPAM), requests. These seems like a security issue on your backend...
Regardless - I need the block to work.

This message (posted above) includes steps that seems to resolve the problem about 99% of the time: http://help.trillian.im/discussions/web-questions/247-unwanted-cont...

I have definitely been able to block more than 99% of the time, but now I've got one that I can't block and it will turn into a show stopper issue if I can't get it resolved. I can't keep having that pop up on my screen and beyond that it is annoying as heck to say ignore, block and have it not work as usual.

I have hit "Deny" so many times that I have lost count. Obviously, Trillian is NOT putting the resources into fixing this issue. You don't get this problem with any other chat apps that I've used and that includes AIM, Yahoo,Google Talk, and MSN. I don't see why it is taking SO LONG to fix this privacy issue.
Support Staff 25 Posted by Glenn on 09 Mar, 2013 12:17 PM
@Cynthia - have you set the privacy options in your account preferences? Right-click each connection icon and click "Account Settings". Go to the "Privacy" section and you will see the option to only allow people on your buddy list to send you messages. Every medium is worded a little differently but they all have the same effect.

@Glenn, thank you for the info. I went through each account as you suggested and only one (google talk) did not have the "only accept messages from users on my contact list" box checked. I have checked this box on all of my accounts. I will let you know if it works. Thanks again!

@Glenn, well that didn't take long. Just got an add message from someone not on my lists. And I was so hopeful....

Believe it or not, it might take a little time for it to actually kick in completely. Please be patient and within a few days, you shouldn't receive any more notifications. However, there might be one or two that slip through the cracks. I seem to get one about every 6 months or so...
